Children's picture book non-fiction about nature

This is my diploma project from a one-year illustration course. I wanted to create a fiction book for children with non-fiction elements so that children could associate them with the main characters and learn something new at the same time.

I decided that there should be two main characters —a boy and a girl aged 3 and 6 years. They are siblings. The story itself is very simple and familiar to almost all children and is told by the girl.
I imagined this book as a A4 format with big spreads like in wimmelbuchs where children can examine the details.
This is my main character search sketches. Finally I've chosen children with the biggest eyes to make their facial expressions more curious-like.
These are my first sketches. Some of them were used in the finals, the others were redone.
Here is the story:

«Hello! My name is Alice and I'm 6 years old. This is my brother Andrew. He is 3 and he is cute. We live in a big house in a big city and have lots of lovely neighbours.
My parents are nice but they are working too much. Once they realized something or remembered something, I don't know what happened exactly but ...
we decided to go on a little trip.
The forest was quiet and beautiful.
There were no animals, only inseсts.»

This is not the full story, only the part of it.
Here is the example of the line sketch.
I used mixed media to draw this project: watercolour and gouache textures and photoshope to put it all together.
